Three tips on having a successful first date over coffee.

If you’re like other people, you probably did not think too much about the first meeting with an online date, or a blind date that a common friend set up. Thus, whenever you want to get the first meet up over with, it will always be over something safe like coffee. So, it all starts with coffee.

Think for a second how a coffee date can be the main factor in your budding romance. I know, it’s hard to believe that you could fall in love with each other while sitting in a crowded coffee shop for a few minutes, exchanging pleasantries and making judgment calls about your date’s behavior. Here are some ways to turn the mundane coffee date into a setting for true love.

3 Steps to Make the Coffee Date Work

Step One: Eye Contact

It’s easy to get distracted when you’re in Starbucks. First, you have a lot of opportunities to people watch, with the never ending line at the counter constantly filled with interesting people. If you feel like looking around taking in the sights during your date, don’t. Your date will notice and will follow your lead. You’ll end up chitchatting about nothing in particular, and ending the date feeling disappointed.

Step Two: The Power of Touch

Keep the eye contact, even when your date seems distracted. But don’t forget the power of touch. Just the first handshake is powerful, and it can lead to more touching, even if you’re just patting his or her hand to keep your date’s attention. No matter how crowded the place is, make your date feel that you’re in your happy little bubble and none of the other people around exist.

Step 3: Comfortable Talk

The coffee date has taken flak for being the most boring of all dating set ups, but most people would suggest it to their potential dates because other options, i.e. movie dates, walk on the beach or a weekend getaway, are much more loaded with implications. Avoid discomfort and enjoy a date where you can truly start as friends with a clean slate.

What most people are missing is that the coffee date gives you a lot of chances to get to know each other and get clued in on what the other is thinking. And, there are a lot of things that you can do over coffee to keep your date wanting more from your friendship. The goal is to make each other comfortable, which can only happen if you share a part of yourself with your date through conversation.
